Venezuelan baseball already has a restart date after Maduro’s capture

The Venezuelan Professional Baseball League (LVBP) reported this Sunday that the championship will resume next January 7after a provisional suspension adopted as a preventive measure following recent security events in the country.

The decision was communicated through a message published on the League’s official Instagram account, in which it was detailed that the central objective is to guarantee adequate conditions for players, workers and fans.

In the statement, the LVBP indicated that, together with the participating teams, it will “opportunely” announce the restructuring of the game calendar, in order to ensure the normal development of the competition. The organization also thanked “the fans and the media for their understanding and constant support of Venezuelan professional baseball,” in a context marked by uncertainty and the abrupt suspension of sporting activities.

The meetings had been stopped on Saturday, January 3after a military operation carried out by the United States in Caracas and other areas of the country. According to information released by Venezuelan authorities, the operation included bombings and left civilian and military victims, although an official balance has not been specified. In the midst of this scenario, the LVBP chose to stop the action in the stadiums as a protection measure.

Political context and institutional consequences

During the military operation they were captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Floreswho were later transferred to the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC), a high-security federal prison located in New York. Both will appear this Monday before a New York federal court, in what will be their first hearing in the United States.

After learning of the capture, the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) ordered on Saturday night that the executive vice president, Delcy Rodrigueztook over as acting president. So far, the TSJ has not established a specific date for the swearing-in ceremony nor has it offered further details about the scope of the measure.

In the midst of this complex political and institutional panorama, the LVBP announcement seeks to return a certain normality to the sports field, one of the main spaces for entertainment and social cohesion in the country. Venezuelan professional baseball, which has a strong tradition and following both locally and internationally, was temporarily paralyzed at a decisive moment in its calendar.

The resumption scheduled for January 7 now opens a process of logistical and sporting adjustments. Teams will have to adapt to a modified schedule, while the League evaluates security conditions at each venue. Although no additional details were offered, the LVBP made it clear that any future decisions will be subject to the evolution of the general situation.
