Unprecedented increase: more than 1.1 million layoffs in the US during 2025

At the moment, The United States has been experiencing a growing wave of layoffs throughout 2025 much higher than during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, according to new data published by Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

However, the figures indicate that in the month of November the layoffs announced by employers were 71,321 job cuts, less than the 153,074 recorded in October. When compared to the same month in 2022, layoffs increased by 24%.

The Challenger, Gray & Christmas analysis also highlights that employers have announced 1,170,821 job cuts as of November of this year, which corresponds to an increase of 54% compared to 2024.

In this sense, Challenger in the report explains that this is the sixth time since 1993 that cumulative layoffs have reached 1.1 millionand the sectors with the greatest job cuts have been telecommunications with 17% more than last year, followed by agriculture with an increase of 26%, services 64% and retailers 139% more.

Besides, The National Retail Federation (NRF) of the United States this month published in its report a notable trend for the last quarter of this year: seasonal hiring has fallen to historic lows.

Businesses this year are reluctant and cautious in their hiring. “I think the uncertainty that we’ve seen in the economy and in retail businesses throughout the year has led some retailers to sit on the sidelines a little bit when it comes to making some of these hiring decisions, because this is not a normal year from a historical perspective,” said NRF economist Mark Mathews.
