Ortiz appeared in federal court in Boston after an investigation dismantled a system of manipulated bets in which the Guardians player participated with his teammate and compatriot Emmanuel Clase.

According to investigations announced by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, Clase and Ortiz provided bettors with advance notice about the types of pitches that would intentionally make and send balls instead of ‘strikes’ to ensure successful bets.
