Senator from Morena calls Carlos Manzo’s widow “fascist” and “ambitious” for wanting to govern Michoacán



The senator of Brunette, Gerardo Fernández Noronawas once again the center of controversy by accusing Greece Quirozthe widow of the murdered mayor Carlos Manzo, of being a “ambitious” and represent “fascist and far-right positions”.

The statements were made during an intervention in the Upper Housewhere Noroña criticized Quiroz’s intention to run for the Governorate of Michoacán.

Quiroz, who assumed the position of Independent Municipal President of Uruapan Following the murder of her husband, she has been a central figure in local politics since her tragic loss.

Noroña took advantage of the session International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to express his discontent with Quiroz’s political ambitions, suggesting that his interest in candidacy for the Government of Michoacán was the product of a “ambition” that arose after the murder of her husband.

Opposition reaction to Noroña’s statements

In a statement, Marmolejo stated: “Saying that ambition woke her up, insinuating that her pain is political opportunism, mocking her accusations or minimizing her right to participate in politics”.

Marmolejo also defended Quiroz, stressing that “Grecia Quiroz is not alone”in a clear support for the former municipal president and her right to political participation.

In a context of growing tension, the Women’s Secretary, Citlalli Hernandezcalled on Fernández Noroña to show empathy towards women. Hernández urged the senator to reflect on his words, considering the context of gender violence in Mexico and the importance of support women who seek to actively participate in politics.

Fernández Noroña rejects accusations of misogyny

Despite the criticism, Fernández Noroña defended her intervention and denied having made misogynistic comments. In a subsequent press conference, the senator said: “Now it turns out that if I hold a position of political criticism, it is misogynistic”. He added that his opinions do not contain any “gram, milligram or even a sigh of misogyny”and reiterated that any disagreement with his position should be discussed from a political perspective, not a personal one.
