Protester breaks into the OAS and accuses the US of acting in Venezuela for oil



A woman, identified as a member of the left-wing feminist organization CodePink, interrupted the extraordinary meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), after raise a sign that said: “Hands off Venezuela!”, just when the US ambassador, Leandro Rizzuto, responded to the interventions of countries like Colombia and Chile that reject Washington’s military actions as a “unilateral action” that violates International Law.

The protester shouted that the capture of Maduro in Venezuela, on January 3, was not an act for democracy but “an imperialist robbery motivated by oil.”

Due to the interruption, the president of the OAS Permanent Council, Colombian Luis Vargas, suspended the session for five minutes until security agents removed the woman from the premises.

Rizzuto reacted by saying that “it’s normal, there are a lot of emotions in the air,” in reference to the intervention.

During the session, the representatives of Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Mexico classified Maduro’s capture as a “dangerous” international interference for the stability and sovereignty of the region.

The Brazilian Government described the capture of Nicolás Maduro as a “kidnapping” by the United States, at the extraordinary meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) held this Tuesday in Washington.

“The bombings in the territory of Venezuela and the kidnapping of its president cross an unacceptable line”stated the permanent representative of Brazil to the OAS, Benoni Belli, during his speech.

Meanwhile, the Government of Colombia condemned and considered it a “worrying” threat to the security and sovereignty of the region.

“What happened on January 3 in Caracas constitutes a clear violation of international law,” stated the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Mauricio Jaramillo, in reference to the US military operation last weekend, during an extraordinary session called by his country.

While the ambassador of Mexico, Alejandro Encinas, said: “We urgently ask to respect international law and the sovereignty of Venezuela. Only the people can freely define the use of their natural resources and their forms of government,”
