Mexico, outside the Indycar calendar for 2026

The return of the Indycar to Mexico You’ll have to wait. The automobile category confirmed Friday that The Hermanos Rodríguez Autodrome will not be part of the 2026 calendar, After not finding an appropriate date to carry out the race due to the impact that the FIFA World Cup In the country.

The decision closes, at least for now, the efforts that had been carried out for months to specify the return of the serial to Mexican territory, a yearning for the fans and figures such as Pato O’ward.

The arguments of the category

Mark Miles, President and Executive Director of Indycar, explained in a statement that although there were advances in negotiations with the local group and with a possible promoter, the coincidence with the World Cup complicated the organization.

“A considerable progress was achieved together with the operational group of the headquarters and our possible promoter,” said Miles. However, he admitted that “the significant impact of next year’s World Cup turned out to be too difficult to guarantee a successful event given the dates available for the summer.”

The manager made it clear that the intention of the category is to keep Mexico as a destination in the future, although it has not been possible by 2026. “While we want to compete in Mexico, we also want to make sure that all those involved feel that the conditions are given to plan a weekend of world class races and very attractive. We will continue working to bring our careers to Mexico and we hope that an event is scheduled as soon as the opportunity is presented,” he added.

The voice of Pato O’ward

Among the most disappointed by the news is Pato O’ward, runner -up of the Indycar in 2025 and current pilot of the Arrow McLaren team. The regiomontano, who also serves as a reserve in Formula 1 with McLaren, expressed his desire to compete in front of his audience.

No one wants a career in Mexico more than mebut we want to create an incredible and lasting event. That requires the appropriate date and year for fans and sponsors to fully support our sport. I am motivated to move forward with this effort and participate in a future career in my country, ”said the Mexican.

Although the absence of Mexico in 2026 means a lost opportunity for Indycar and for the local fans, both the organization and O’ward keep the door open so that the Hermanos Rodríguez autodrome can receive the category in the near future, when the conditions allow it.
