Mavel Ruiz, judge of the Miami-Dade Circuit Court, temporarily blocked the transfer that local authorities intended to carry out of land located in downtown Miami where a library dedicated to President Donald Trump is planned to be built.
Added to this resolution was the support of another subsequent vote where Ron DeSantis, governor of Florida, and the state cabinet were in favor of transferring the land valued at more than $67 million dollars.
However, Historian Marvin Dunn, a civil rights advocate in Florida, filed a lawsuit against the Board of Directors of the Miami-Dad University Districte for considering that he acted improperly when donating the land.
The 85-year-old former university professor reported an alleged violation of the Transparency Law enacted for Florida in 1967, through which it is required that meetings of boards or commissions must be notified in advance and open to the public, including minutes of the established agreements.

In this regard, the judge Mavel Ruiz sympathized with the plaintiff and, arguing that Miami-Dade College did not give the public reasonable notice prior to the vote held last month, chose to stop the donation of the aforementioned land.
“This is not an easy decision. This is not a case, at least for this court, that has political roots,” he said.
Unlike the rest of the other meetings that the Miami-Dade University District Board of Directors has held so far this year, the 8:00 am meeting on September 23 was not broadcast live, which caused discomfort among Donald Trump’s opponents, as they considered that keeping the vote secret aligned with the Republican’s interests in building a masterful building in the heart of Miami, next to the Freedom Tower.
In this way, two ways arise to solve the conflict generated. The first is for the Board of Directors to hold a new meeting with public notice to discuss the transfer of the land.
Another solution is for the lawyers of the university in question to present their arguments before the court with the aim of respecting the result of the vote carried out last month.
