Hoduran immigrant arrested after causing accident in Maryland



The Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) reported on the arrest of a man of Honduran origin who was accused of several violations in Baltimoreafter causing an accident where a woman was seriously injured.

Baltimore ICE arrested Kevin Alexis Méndez Ortíz on November 25 during an immigration operation in Oxon Hill, ICE said in a statement.

ICE shared that Méndez Ortiz entered the United States in 2022 without having papers, he is originally from Honduras. The immigrant hit a car head-on, causing one person to suffer “life-threatening” injuries.

“This tragic incident underscores why ICE remains steadfast in its mission to identify, detain and deport undocumented immigrants.” that pose a threat to public safety,” said Jeremy Bacon, acting director of the ICE Baltimore Field Office.

“A US citizen suffered devastating injuries due to the reckless conduct of an undocumented immigrant who had no legal right to be in our country,” he added.

The Baltimore field office expressed its hope that the victim makes a quick recovery and assures that “we will continue to work tirelessly to keep our communities safe from people who endanger the public with irresponsible and illegal actions.”

He crossed in the wrong direction and hit the victim’s car.

Official documents report that on November 9, Méndez was traveling east on a Maryland highway when he crossed into oncoming traffic in the west lane, colliding head-on with a vehicle. Méndez fled the scene of the accident.

“The passenger of the vehicle that Méndez crashed suffered fractures of the vertebrae, ribs, collarbone and wrist, injuries to the intestines and uterus, rupture of the diaphragm, collapsed lung, concussion and others. His recovery is long,” the authorities said.

Three days after the accident, the Prince George’s County Police Department cited Mendez for a series of violations listed below:

  • Failure to comply with the obligation of drivers to show their license to uniformed police when requested.
  • Failure to display registration card when requested by a police officer.
  • Driving on the highway without the required license and authorization.
  • Failure to immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of an accident involving bodily injury.
  • Do not return or remain at the scene of an accident that involves damage to the vehicle attended to.
  • Failure of the driver of the vehicle involved in an accident to provide information about the insurance policy.
  • Do not drive the vehicle on the right half of the road.
  • Changing lanes when it is unsafe after a collision with a hit-and-run vehicle.
  • Failure to control the speed of the vehicle on the road to avoid a collision.
  • Failure to obey instructions from properly placed traffic control devices.
  • Failure to obey the signs of the designated lanes.

In 2022, the United States Border Patrol detained Mendez after he entered the United States near Hildago, Texas. The man received a summons to appear that same day and He was released in the United States on his own recognizance.
