At least 29 dead and 15 missing is the preliminary balance left by the intense rains of the last two days in Mexico, mainly for states in the center and east of the country.
Fatalities have been reported in the states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro and Veracruz.
During the night, Civil Protection authorities reported damages in around 80 municipalities in the country and 171,000 without electricity service.
The governor of Hidalgo, Julio Menchaca, reported at least 16 dead due to landslides and 8 missing.
“This is a situation, well, let’s say, that is not programmed. Nature plays these situations like this,” considered the state president.
In Puebla, the number of deaths rose to nine, as a result of hillslides that buried homes in the Sierra Norte of the state, according to the state government.
However, the authorities specified that the figure could change in the next few hours because a dozen people, who were in the affected homes, are still missing.
In Veracruz, 38 municipalities were affected, especially Álamo and Poza Rica, due to the overflowing of a river. A police officer helping the victims was killed and another person also died.
The National Civil Protection Coordination announced that they will reinforce attention this weekend to the effects of tropical storm Raymond in the Pacific, which is why it is expected to make landfall in the next few hours in Baja California Sur as a tropical depression.
