The Central Bank of the Argentine Republic (BCRA) launched a currency this Tuesday silver on the occasion of the 2026 soccer World Cup, which has the trace of Diego Armando Maradona’s historic goal against England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup in Mexico engraved on the back.

“The BCRA issued a commemorative coin silver dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cupwhose main motif is a diagram of the legendary play of the second Argentine goal against England in Mexico 1986, Considered the best in World Cup history“, the organization announced in a statement, in which it highlighted that next year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada “will mark 40 years of that sporting milestone.”

This piece is part of the International Commemorative Coin Program for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which follows similar initiatives in previous World Cups, in which the Argentine Central Bank also participated.

“The design of this commemorative coin, in the central part of its obverse, presents a ball crossing the coin, as an allegory about football passion, while In the upper arch the legend Argentine Republic is inscribed and, in the lower one, FIFA World Cup 2026“said the statement.

The reverse, for its part, shows a diagram of Maradona’s legendary play, from the moment he receives the ball behind the middle of the field to the shot on goal after dribbling past four English players and goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

That goal marked the partial 2-0 of the quarterfinal duel, after a controversial goal with the hand of the Argentine soccer star baptized in Argentina as ‘The Hand of God’ and before the injury time of the English scorer Gary Lineker to seal the final 2-1.

Argentina would beat Belgium in the semifinals and then Germany in the final to win its second World Cup, after the title won at home in 1978.

“The coin is made of 925 silver, has a fluted edge, a weight of 27 grams and a diameter of 40 millimeters. The issue for the national market is 2,500 units. In addition, gold coins of a similar design were minted that will be sold internationally,” added the BCRA, which detailed that the coins will have a symbolic value of ten Argentine pesos.

The design was carried out by the Strategic Planning Management of Tesoro – Sub-Management of Numismatic Emissions of the BCRA and they were minted by the Royal Mint of Spain – National Mint and Stamp Factory.
