Aligator Alcatraz could be empty in a matter of days, according to Florida official

After federal judge Kathleen Williams rejected the request of the US government to immediately suspend her own ruling that ordered the progressive closure of the Immigrant Detention Center raised by Florida in the heart of the Everglades swamps and popularly baptized as Aligator Alcatraz, It transpired that the site would have a slowdown.

According to The New York Times, The Aligator Alcatraz immigration detention center is not operating at its maximum capacity and will be empty in the coming days.

Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Emergency Management Division, said in an email released by the newspaper that the detention center, “would probably run out of people in a few days.”

The message would have sent a day after Federal Judge Kathleen Williams of the Southern District of Florida, will set a period of two months to dismantle the site, West of Miami, where it prohibited the entry of more migrants, although the center will remain operational until then.

Williams partially failed in favor of environmental groups Friends of the Everglades and Center for Biological Diversity, In addition to the Miccosukee tribe, which filed a demand to demand the complete and immediate closure of the place to damage the Everglades, a natural area with 36 endemic species threatened such as panthers, cranks, caimanes and crocodiles.

The order prohibits installing any additional infrastructure such as tents, bedrooms, buildings or offices, as well as paving, digging or fence, in addition to preventing “bringing any additional people to the site who were no longer arrested at the site at the time of order.”

In response, the Florida Attorney’s Office, James Uthmeier, appealed the judge’s decision.

For his part, the governor of Florida, Republican Ron Desantis announced the activation of a ‘Plan B’: the opening of a new center in northern Florida, called ‘Deportation Depot’, with the capacity to house 2,000 detainees.

The state of Florida has repeatedly refused to reveal how many detainees housed in the center, so Guthrie’s email is the first sign that the center is not operating at full capacity or close to it.
