Ron DeSantis boasted about the detention of almost 20,000 immigrants in Florida in the last nine months

Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida, highlighted that, thanks to the efforts implemented by his administration, in the last nine months nearly 20,000 immigrants were detained in the “Sunshine State.”

During a speech delivered before the Florida Congress, the Republican who will give up his position in January of next year after maintaining two terms at the head of the government highlighted his aligned with the policy promoted by the White House to confront the immigration phenomenon registered in the United States.

“Florida is the only state in the country that requires state and local cooperation with federal authorities. In the past nine months alone, Florida is responsible for the apprehension of almost 20,000 foreigners handed over to the Department of Homeland Security,” he indicated.

And the fact is that, during the administration of the 47-year-old conservative, the so-called SB 4-C law was approved in Florida, the essence of which is to define as a state crime the entry and permanence of foreigners lacking legal status in their cities and counties.

After ingratiating himself with Trump, Ron DeSantis promoted the conditioning of two large centers to detain immigrants such as Alligator Alcatraz, located west of Miami; and Deportation Sport, based in North Florida.

Both projects were praised from Washington and even served as a model for other parts of the country to enable more properties where immigrants detained during operations by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) can be transferred.

However, The conservative governor’s strategy is far from over, since now sessions will be held in the Florida Congress where more initiatives aimed at reducing immigration will be evaluated.such as: greater severity in the implementation of fines for employers who hire immigrants without legal status.

Another measure to analyze has to do with the possibility that immigrants previously had to access loans or send remittances regardless of whether they lacked the necessary documentation to prove their stay in the United States.

Regarding the final stretch of his administration, Ron DeSantis intends for his image as an option on the ballot to remain in view of the elections to be held in 2028.
