Donald Trump threatened again that he will pressure FIFA to withdraw the 2026 World Cup matches from a Democratic city, Bostonassuming that it was “taken” by the recent riots.
Thus, Boston becomes the third city of its kind to receive threats from the American president. Trump also stated that he would consider similar measures against Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympics due to potential security concerns.
“If someone is doing a bad job, and I perceive that the conditions are unsafe, I would call Gianni (Infantino), the president of FIFA (…) and say: ‘Let’s move him somewhere else’”Trump told the media.
“I could say the same thing about the Olympic Games, because, as you know, we have events in different places. The Olympic Games are held in Los Angeles. If I thought that Los Angeles was not going to be well prepared, I would move it to another location,” added the Republican president.
Even though Trump does not have the power to modify a headquarters or the location of a World Cup matchHe maintains a very close relationship with Infantino, who does have it.
Trump’s words were directed mainly towards the city of Boston, whose mayor is Democrat Michelle Yu, and which has been in the Administration’s crosshairs in recent months for considering that it is interfering in its anti-immigration policies.
According to the FIFA calendar, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, adjacent to Boston, is scheduled to host seven matches of the World Cup, which will be played between June 11 and July 19 of next year.
These threats are in addition to those he launched in September against other cities governed by Democrats, such as Seattle or San Francisco, to which he warned that he could withdraw matches from the 2026 World Cup if he considers them unsafe.
