It’s not just pre-cooked pasta anymore: frozen spinach is also recalled across the US due to possible listeria contamination

The company Sno Pac Foods confirmed the voluntary recall of various batches of frozen organic spinach after detecting listeria monocytogenes in quality tests. This decision was implemented in October 2025 and affects distributors and consumers nationwide.

The importance lies in the fact that the listeria It represents a considerable health risk for vulnerable groups, as confirmed by federal authorities. Let us remember that before the measure of recall due to possible listeria contamination was mainly related to pre-cooked pasta from the Nate’s Fine Foods brand.

The products now involved are Del Mar Bulk Organic Frozen Spinach (35 pounds) and Sno Pac Organic Frozen Cut Spinach (10 ounces).

Instructions to consumers

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends checking labels and returning affected products. Above all, be aware of the lot codes and expiration dates to facilitate identification.

Risks associated with listeria

Listeria monocytogenes represents a serious threat, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, the elderly, and immunocompromised people. Contamination can lead to serious illnesses, including listeriosis, which has severe symptoms.

Symptoms of listeriosis

The specific symptoms of listeriosis vary depending on the age and health status of the infected person, manifesting themselves as follows:

General symptoms in adults

  • Fever
  • Shivers
  • Flu-like muscle aches
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (in case of intestinal disease)
  • In invasive infections (when the bacteria spread outside the intestine): headache, neck stiffness, confusion, loss of balance and seizures.

In pregnant people

  • Mild symptoms or even no symptoms
  • The infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or serious infection in the newborn, putting the baby’s life at risk.

in newborns

  • Subtle symptoms that may include poor appetite, irritability, fever, vomiting, and difficulty breathing
  • The infection can lead to sepsis or meningitis, with high mortality.

In older people and people with a weakened immune system

  • Increased risk of severe disease, with symptoms similar to the invasive form: high fever, muscle pain, neurological symptoms (such as meningitis).

Listeria intestinal disease

  • Rapid onset (within approximately 24 hours after consuming contaminated food)
  • Diarrhea, vomiting and mild symptoms that last 1 to 3 days, although it can progress to invasive disease in some cases.

Listeria Statistics

Compared to other foodborne illnesses, listeriosis is rare but very serious. Even with adequate antibiotic treatment, the disease has a high mortality rate, 20% to 30%, the FDA notes.

More than 90% of people with listeriosis are hospitalized, often in intensive care units. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year and about 260 die. The hospitalization rate is 94%, meaning that of the approximately 1,600 people who contract the disease each year, about 1,500 will be hospitalized.

Reinforcement of health protocols

The detection of listeria has prompted increased control and surveillance measures by the FDA and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) in response to an increase in plant-based outbreaks.

Sno Pac Foods has temporarily suspended production while the source of the contamination is investigated. The Sno Pac Foods hotline for inquiries is (507) 725-5281, operating Monday through Friday.
